Photographing wildflowers in Corfu
Corfu 2009.
We had been to Corfu in July before, and realised it was very touristy and arid at that time of year, so this time we went in May while the Corfu wildflowers were still out, and it was fantastic. We stayed in San Stefanos in the North West, in apartments set amongst olive groves.
We visited Mount Pantocrator and found many rock plants in the poor soil. Most of them could be seen from the road without having to venture too far afield.
We also visited a Byzantine Monastery near Paleocastritsa - another rocky outcrop where the monks herb garden had naturalised.
We were delighted to find fireflies around the village every evening, and toads chorusing the night away. We even saw turtles in the nearby stream. I had been reading Gerald Durrell’s Corfu Trilogy before we went. These books are set either side of the Second World War and it would be naive to think that the island in any way still resembles the one he wrote about - but there is still plenty of nature!
I am a keen amateur gardener not a botanist, so the labelling of the wildflower photos is a bit vague!
